Reflection Module 5

I am a static person. I utilize all of the static technologies on a regular basis and I find it easier to learn them and teach them. My strongest area would probably be communication. I find it easiest to integrate communicative devices because I teach communication and the next area that would be my strongest would be collaboration. Everything I do in the classroom is a collaborative project with the students so using tools to aid in a collaborative effort are always a great additive. I think that I am starting to use dynamic tools more and I am hoping to find myself to have a good balance of the two because I think they are both important to learning and facilitating technology in the classroom.

Graphic Organizer on Flip Cameras

Graphic Organizer:

I chose flip cameras as the innovation for my graphic organizer. Flip cameras are a great tool for the classroom and apply very well to communication, collaboration and content. I love my flip camera and I find more uses for it every year that I integrate it into my classroom. My new favorite use: I leave it with the sub and have them video tape the class while they are working, it makes for a great extra set of eyes and the behavior is impeccable! (Side note) I am so glad that we are getting an opportunity to blog but more importantly experiment with trying to get different formats to post on the blog. I feel so happy when I finally get something to work!!

Students who don't play well... (Module 3 Blog Post)

As an instructor in an online class, I am not sure that I would be comfortable allowing a student to work alone on a project. I think that collaboration is a very important part of the learning process and in any subject area a student will have to have access to a skill set of collaborative work skills for a job in that field. I would explain to the student that there are students that struggle with test taking and we still make them take tests.
I work primarily in the world of collaborative learning in Drama and I do not allow my students to work alone in class when there is group work to be done, especially because that is the student that has the most to learn from this type of work. The assessment of collaborative learning should always be on an individual basis. There are many outcomes that a project can have and with all different levels of learner participation but it is important that each student realize that they are each a part of the process and together they make a successful product. It is possible for a great product to come from a process in which not everyone was participating and that is why students need to be assessed based only on their work.
The way that I perceive knowledge and assessment is a bit different in Drama then in other subject areas. First off, in many cases what I am assessing is subjective and although I have had a lot of training in what I do, there are times where another Drama teacher might feel differently about a specific performance. I try to use rubrics as much as possible to make sure that the student understands and meets the needs of the criteria, to avoid the subjectivity issue. Secondly, my students all come to class at different talent levels, I view them in that way and watch each one excel from their own starting point. I think in any class that is the job of a teacher...to propel a student forward is what we should deem as a successful accomplishment.

Communicado

The internet has drastically changed the ways that we communicate. There is IMing, social networking, blogs, vlogs, podcasts, iReporting, Sykpe and virtual worlds. As the means of communicating online continue to develop and evolve so does the way that we integrate them into distance education. Siemen's spoke of how the more that people got comfortable with all the different ways to communicate online, the more they were able to adapt from the usual f2f classroom to an online environment. The evolution of communication online started with AOL. AOL provided its users with chat and IM and this was the beginning of a revolutionary change in the way that we communicate. I think that online communication is just beginning to peak but there are many more new types of communication that is still waiting to be diffused into our everyday lives. If a professor maximizes the tools of communication that are available then students can, share work, talk, text, type, collaborate, tweak and change, listen, comment and announce their learning advances. These types of communication breakdown into two categories synchronous and asynchronous communication. Synchronous happens instantly, like IMing and asynchronous happens over time, such as blogging :) Each of these types of communication have their benefits to distance education and I think to have an 80% asynchronous and 20% synchronous environment would facilitate the best learning. Students are more likely to process the information and share it with a different intensity, if they have time to do so. Instant conversation is also important and should be included but at a disproportionate rate.

Great Technology Article

I have been talking about this since I read about it in a class two years ago...won't this make teaching English, Grammar and Writing, so very, very different!

Not too Crafty!!!

I think that Distance Education has been widely accepted but now the necessary foundations need to be recognized and adhered to in the class structure. The two concepts that are similar but poignant in our need to evolve are the equivalency theory and the craft approach. Both of these concepts have similar foundations, which are that lessons from the classroom cannot be duplicated online; they have to assume the format of online learning. I think that distance learning for businesses, higher education and even k-12 are growing at an exponential rate but unless the lessons are proactive in their design Distance learning will lose its credibility. I think it is important that programs such as the one that I am enrolled in exist to educate educators in the intricate differences in teaching online. That is not to say that distance education isn’t also going to change drastically while it is being shaped and that is the greatest challenge when you are working with technology. It is important to keep abreast of the changes but also make sure that we are buying into the right resources, the ones that are going to diffuse and go the distance (no pun intended).
